Budgie Seed
Most budgie owners buy a ready-made seed mix to feed their birds, which is fine as long as you can trust the supplier. Seeds need to be fresh, as they have a limited shelf life. Once this optimum time has passed, most of the nutrients will have disappeared. The same problem occurs if the seed has been exposed to direct light or too much heat. Herbicides and pesticides are an issue, too, so it’s important to know where the various ingredients of the seed mix came from in the first place, and under what conditions they were grown. To find a good seed source, ask around – search bird forums online, and speak with budgerigar breeders.
Basic Seeds are:
Yellow millet:
Yellow Millet (also known as Foxtail Millet or Panicum Militare (Little Millet) or German Millet) is the most nutritious grains that are high in starch and easily gets digested. It is very rich in amino acids and therefore used both as food for humans and to feed animals.
Canary seed:
Canary grass is a plant, Phalaris canariensis, belonging to the family Poaceae. Originally a native of the Mediterranean region, it is now grown commercially in several parts of the world for birdseed.
White millet:
White millet, also known as proso millet or white proso millet, is a favorite with birds including quail, migratory native American sparrows, doves, towhees, juncos, and cardinals. ... As with any seed, when millet gets wet it germinates, and also can foster bacteria and fungal growth.
Peeled oats:
Peeled oats are manufactured by peeling oats. The color is usually yellow or brownish. In comparison with oats has higher crude protein content (on average 14 %), has a low fiber level and very good dietetic and specific quality. Regarding higher price is used in feed mixtures for young ones (e.g. piglets), ill animals and for feed mixtures for ornamental birds (bird-seed).
Japanese millet:
Also called barnyard millet or billion-dollar grass, Japanese millet is grown principally as a forage grass. It resembles barnyard grass and probably originated from that species. It makes the most rapid growth of all the millets when conditions are favorable and can ripen grain in as little as 45 days.
Red millet:
Red millet is a warm season, cultivated grass species. It has been grown for centuries for its seed, as a forage and human consumption. In the UK it is generally used as a game cover component, or in a winter bird food, the mixture to provide food during the hungry gap when natural resources are exhausted.
Hempseed:
Hemp seeds are safe when consumed in moderation. Because hemp seeds are high in fat, the sudden increase in fat caused by eating large amounts of hemp may cause mild diarrhea.
